The most important question any church must answer is the same question Jesus asked His disciples: “Whom say ye that I am?” The Latin phrase Deitas Christi means “the deity of Christ.” It teaches that Jesus Christ is fully God. He is the eternal, uncreated Son of God, the Word made flesh, the Alpha and Omega, the Lord of glory, and the only Savior. He is not a created being, not an exalted angel, not the brother of Satan, not merely a prophet, not merely a moral example, and not merely a man uniquely used by God.
Biblical Christianity confesses that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man.
What Scripture Teaches
John 1:1 says:
This verse teaches both distinction and deity. The Word was “with God,” showing personal distinction. The Word “was God,” showing full deity. John 1:14 then says, “And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us.” The eternal Word became man without ceasing to be God.
John 8:58 records Jesus saying, “Before Abraham was, I am.” Jesus did not merely say, “Before Abraham was, I existed.” He used the divine “I am” language connected to God’s self-revelation in Exodus 3:14. His hearers understood the claim, which is why they picked up stones.
John 20:28 records Thomas saying to the risen Christ, “My Lord and my God.” Jesus did not rebuke Thomas for blasphemy. He received the confession.
Colossians 2:9 says, “For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily.” The fullness of deity dwells in Christ. He is not partially divine. He is not a lesser divine being. He is fully God.
Titus 2:13 calls Jesus “the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.” Hebrews 1:3 says He is “the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person.” Revelation 22:13 records Christ saying, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.”
Why This Is a Non-negotiable Dealbreaker
If a church gets Jesus wrong, it gets Christianity wrong.
The deity of Christ is essential because only God can save. Psalms 49:7 says no man can redeem his brother. Salvation requires more than a good example or a heroic martyr. Sinners need a divine Redeemer. Jesus must be truly man to represent us, and truly God to save us.
If Jesus is created, He is not the Creator. If He is merely an angel, He is not worthy of worship. If He is only a prophet, His death cannot bear the full weight of divine redemption. If He is not God, then the church is guilty of idolatry for worshiping Him. But Scripture commands and displays worship of the Son (John 5:23; Hebrews 1:6; Revelation 5:12-14).
The deity of Christ also protects the gospel. The One who died on the cross is not a mere creature. He is the incarnate Son of God. Acts 20:28 speaks of “the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.” The blood of Christ has infinite worth because of the Person who shed it.

How to Evaluate a Church’s Statement of Faith
Look for a clear confession that Jesus Christ is fully God and fully man. The statement should affirm His eternal existence, virgin birth, sinless life, substitutionary death, bodily resurrection, ascension, present intercession, and future return.
Good signs include phrases such as “eternal Son of God,” “fully God and fully man,” “God the Son,” “the Word made flesh,” “virgin-born,” “sinless,” “bodily resurrection,” and “only Savior.”
Warning signs include statements that call Jesus created, subordinate in essence to the Father, merely a prophet, merely a teacher, merely a moral example, or divine only in the sense that all people can be divine. Also reject any teaching that identifies Jesus as Michael the archangel, a spirit child, a lesser god, or a man who became God.
A church’s statement of faith should be specific. Many false religions speak respectfully about Jesus. They may call Him Savior, Lord, Messiah, or Son of God while redefining those words. The statement must clearly affirm that Jesus is eternal, uncreated, and fully God.
Conclusion
Deitas Christi is not a theological luxury. It is the heart of the Christian confession. Jesus is Lord. Jesus is God the Son. Jesus is the eternal Word made flesh. Jesus is the crucified and risen Savior. Jesus is the coming King.
A church that denies the deity of Christ is not merely weak. It is outside biblical Christianity. No amount of kindness, activity, music, tradition, or moral teaching can compensate for a false Christ.
The church must confess the Christ of Scripture: fully God, fully man, one Person, the only Savior. Anything less is a non-negotiable dealbreaker.
