These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
And those who are peacemakers will plant seeds of peace and reap a harvest of righteousness. (James 3:18 NLT
As we all know, marriage is a beautiful bond that requires constant care and cultivation. One of the most important aspects of maintaining a healthy and harmonious marriage is planting seeds of peace. James 3:18 tells us that “Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.”
The Greek word for “peacemakers” in this verse is “eirenopoioi” which means, “makers of peace, peacemakers”
The Greek word for “sow” in this verse is “speiro” which means, “to scatter seed, to sow.”
This verse is reminding us that as peacemakers in our marriages, we have the power to sow seeds of peace through our words, actions, and attitudes. These seeds, when nurtured, will grow and bear fruit in the form of righteousness. This means that when we actively work towards creating a peaceful environment in our marriages, it will lead to righteousness in our relationship.
Moreover, it’s important to remember that sowing seeds of peace is not always easy. It requires patience, understanding, and forgiveness. It’s easy to be quick to anger and react in unpeaceful ways, but it’s crucial that we choose to sow peace instead.
Proverbs 15:1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.”
Ephesians 4:3 “Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”
Colossians 3:15 “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, for as members of one body you are called to peace. And always be thankful.”
However, this verse also implies a warning for those who fail to sow seeds of peace. When we neglect to actively work towards creating a peaceful environment in our marriages, it can lead to a lack of righteousness in our relationship. If we constantly react in unpeaceful ways, speak harsh words, or hold grudges, we are not sowing seeds of peace.
Failing to sow seeds of peace can cause our marriages to suffer, and it can lead to a lack of growth, love, and harmony. It’s important to remember that peace is not the absence of conflict, but rather the presence of understanding and forgiveness.
Proverbs 17:1 “Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.”
1 Peter 3:11 “He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it.”
Let us make a conscious effort to sow seeds of peace in our marriages. Let us choose to speak words of encouragement, forgiveness, and understanding. Let us choose to be peacemakers, and in turn, reap a harvest of righteousness in our marriages. Let us not neglect this important aspect of our marriage and let peace be the foundation of our relationship.
