These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord. (Romans 12:19)
In this verse, Paul reminds us that it is not our place to seek revenge or to avenge ourselves when we have been wronged. Instead, we are to leave it to the wrath of God, trusting that He will bring about justice in His own time and way.
In marriage, it is inevitable that we will experience hurt and disappointment at times. It can be tempting to want to seek revenge or to make our spouse pay for the ways that they have wronged us. But this is not what God calls us to do. Instead, He calls us to forgive and to let go of our desire for revenge.
Forgiveness is not easy, and it often requires a great deal of effort and grace. But it is essential for a healthy and thriving marriage. When we forgive our spouse, we are showing them love and grace, just as God has shown us love and grace through the forgiveness of our sins. Forgiveness also frees us from the burden of anger and bitterness, and allows us to move forward in our relationship with love and joy.
As you and your spouse work to build a strong and healthy marriage, remember to let go of the desire for revenge and to extend forgiveness to each other. Trust in God to bring about justice in His own way and time, and seek to show love and grace to your spouse, just as God has shown love and grace to you.
