Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

Do two walk together, unless they have agreed? (Amos 3:3)

The Hebrew word used for “walk” in this verse is “halak,” which means “to walk, to go, to live.” This word emphasizes the idea of movement and action, suggesting that two people must be actively working together in order to be in agreement.

The Hebrew word for “together” is “yachad,” which means “unified, together, one.” This word highlights the idea of unity and oneness, suggesting that two people must be in harmony in order to walk together.

In marriage, walking together means actively working towards unity and oneness in every aspect of our lives. It means making decisions together, supporting each other’s goals, and being there for one another through the good times and the bad.

Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. (Ephesians 4:3 NIV

This verse reminds us that unity in marriage is not something that just happens; it takes effort. We must make a conscious decision to work towards unity and to maintain the bond of peace in our marriage.

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. (1 Corinthians 1:10 NIV

This verse reminds us that unity in marriage is not just about getting along, but also about being of one mind and one thought. It is about making sure that our thoughts and actions are aligned with each other and with the will of God.

And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. (Colossians 3:14 NIV

This verse reminds us that the foundation of unity in marriage is love. Love is what holds all of the virtues together and makes them work. When we love each other, we are more likely to be patient, kind, and forgiving.

In conclusion, walking together in marriage means actively working towards unity and oneness in every aspect of our lives. It takes effort, but by making a conscious decision to work towards unity and maintaining the bond of peace in our marriage, it is possible to have a strong, loving and united relationship. Remember that the foundation of unity in marriage is love, let’s put on love and watch how it binds all the virtues together in perfect unity.
