These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Who is a God like you, who pardons iniquity, and passes over the disobedience of the remnant of his heritage? He doesn’t retain his anger forever, because he delights in loving kindness. He will again have compassion on us. He will tread our iniquities under foot. You will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:18-19)
In marriage, it is inevitable that we will hurt and sin against one another. Whether it’s through words or actions, we will disappoint and offend our spouse at some point. When these moments occur, it can be tempting to hold onto feelings of guilt and shame. We might try to justify our actions or downplay the hurt that we have caused.
However, Micah 7:19 reminds us that God is faithful to cast all our sins into the depths of the sea. This is a beautiful picture of the forgiveness that God offers us through Jesus Christ. When we confess our sins and turn to Him, He removes them as far as the east is from the west (Psalms 103:12). He does not hold our sins against us or remember them any longer (Hebrews 8:12).
In marriage, this truth should give us great hope and encouragement. It means that we can confess our sins to one another and ask for forgiveness, knowing that God will extend His grace and mercy to us. It also means that we can extend grace and forgiveness to our spouse when they sin against us, knowing that God has done the same for us.
So the next time you are struggling with feelings of guilt or shame in your marriage, remember Micah 7:19 and the forgiveness that God offers through Jesus Christ. Confess your sins to one another and to God, and trust in His faithfulness to cast them into the depths of the sea. Seek reconciliation and restoration in your marriage, and extend grace and forgiveness to one another as God has done for you.
