These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. (1 John 2:15)
Don’t love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father’s love isn’t in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—isn’t the Father’s, but is the world’s. The world is passing away with its lusts, but he who does God’s will remains forever. (1 John 2:15 WEB
In this verse, the Greek word for “world” is “kosmos,” which refers to the fallen, sinful world system that is in opposition to God and His ways. In marriage, loving the world can manifest in many ways such as prioritizing material possessions, focusing on physical appearance and status, or becoming consumed by our own desires.
In the Old Testament, we see the example of Solomon in the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon, who was the wealthiest and wisest king of Israel, accumulated wealth, pleasure, and power, but in the end, he realized that it was all vanity and emptiness. He realized that true satisfaction can only be found in loving and following God.
In the New Testament, we see the example of Demas in 2 Timothy 4:10. Demas was a companion of Paul and co-worker in the ministry, but he loved the world more than the things of God and deserted Paul.
Loving the world means putting our own desires above the will of God and the needs of others. It leads to dissatisfaction, emptiness, and ultimately separation from God. The Bible instructs us to love God and to put Him first in all things, including our marriages.
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” - Matthew 6:33
In this verse, Jesus is teaching us that when we seek God and His kingdom first, all the other things we need will be given to us. In the context of marriage, this means putting God and His will above our own desires and seeking to honor Him in our relationship.
In conclusion, the danger of loving the world in a Christian marriage is that it can lead to dissatisfaction, emptiness, and ultimately separation from God. The Bible teaches us to put God and His will above our own desires and to seek Him first in all things, including our marriages. Examples from the Old Testament and the New Testament, shows us how loving the world can lead to negative consequences, but when we put God first, we will find true satisfaction and fulfillment in our marriages.
