Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

Beloved, let’s love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. (1 John 4:7)

In this verse, the Greek word for “love” is “agape,” which refers to a selfless, unconditional love that is characterized by sacrifice and service. This kind of love is at the heart of a healthy Christian marriage, and it is modeled for us by God’s love for us.

In the Old Testament, we see the example of Hosea and Gomer in the book of Hosea. Hosea was a prophet of God who was commanded by God to marry a prostitute named Gomer. Despite Gomer’s unfaithfulness and repeated betrayals, Hosea continued to love her and pursue her, demonstrating a selfless and unconditional love.

In the New Testament, we see the example of Jesus and his disciples. Jesus demonstrated a selfless and unconditional love for his disciples, even when they doubted and betrayed him. Jesus washed the feet of his disciples, an act of service and humility, showing them the kind of love they should have for one another.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

In this passage, Paul describes the characteristics of agape love. These characteristics, such as patience, kindness, selflessness, and forgiveness, are essential for a healthy Christian marriage.

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” - John 13:34

In this verse, Jesus tells us that the greatest commandment is to love one another. He also tells us that we must love others in the same way that he has loved us, selflessly and unconditionally.

In conclusion, loving one another is an essential aspect of a healthy Christian marriage. The Bible gives us examples of selfless and unconditional love in the Old Testament and the New Testament, and it is modeled for us by God’s love for us. We should strive to love our spouse in the same way that Jesus has loved us, with patience, kindness, selflessness, and forgiveness. As 1 John 4:11 says, “since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.”
