Daily marriage devotionals for growing godly marriages

Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9)

This verse reminds us of the importance of confessing our sins in our marriages.

In the Old Testament, the prophet Isaiah teaches us about the power of confessing our sins. In Isaiah 59:12, he says, “For our transgressions are multiplied before you, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and we know our iniquities.” This verse tells us that our sins are not hidden from God and that they testify against us. However, by confessing our sins, we can receive forgiveness and purification.

In the New Testament, James 5:16 encourages us to confess our sins to one another, stating “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” This verse reminds us that confessing our sins not only brings healing to ourselves but also to our relationships with others.

The Greek word used in 1 John 1:9 for “confess” is “homologeo", which means to agree or acknowledge. In confessing our sins, we are agreeing with God that we have sinned and acknowledging our need for forgiveness.

In Hebrew, the word for “confess” is “yada” which means to know, acknowledge, or confess. In confessing our sins, we are acknowledging our wrongdoing and knowing that we are in need of forgiveness.

We are reminded in Proverbs 28:13, “He who conceals his sins does not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them finds mercy.” This verse reminds us that when we conceal our sins, we will not prosper, but when we confess and renounce them, we will find mercy.

In marriage, confessing our sins is crucial for maintaining a healthy relationship with our spouse and with God. By confessing our sins, we can receive forgiveness, purification, and healing in our marriage. Let us strive to confess our sins regularly and experience the blessings of a forgiven and purified marriage.
