Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

If I fought with animals at Ephesus for human purposes, what does it profit me? If the dead are not raised, then “let’s eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” (1 Corinthians 15:32)

1 Corinthians 15:32 states, “If I fought wild beasts in Ephesus with no more than human hopes, what have I gained? If the dead are not raised, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” This verse highlights the importance of living a righteous life, even in the face of persecution and suffering.

One powerful example of this from the Old Testament is the story of Job. Despite losing everything he had, including his wealth, children, and health, Job remained faithful to God and refused to curse Him, as seen in Job 1:22 “In all this, Job did not sin or charge God with wrong.” Job’s faithfulness and righteousness in the face of suffering serves as an example for us.

In the New Testament, Hebrews 11:32-40 speaks about the examples of the Martyrs, who through faith conquered kingdoms, enforced justice, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the power of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, were made strong out of weakness, became mighty in war, put foreign armies to flight. By faith, they were able to face persecutions and death with joy, knowing that they would receive a better resurrection.

It’s important to note that living a righteous life is not always easy, it requires discipline, self-control, and a willingness to put God’s will above our own. It also requires the guidance of the Lord and the strength he provides.

The Greek word used for “righteous” in this context is “dikaios” which means to be morally upright and to be justified before God. This means that living a righteous life is to live according to God’s standards and to strive for holiness.

In conclusion, Living a righteous life is an essential aspect of a Christian marriage. It requires discipline, self-control, and a willingness to put God’s will above our own. It requires guidance and strength from God and it requires us to look to the examples of those who have gone before us and remain faithful in the face of suffering, like Job and the Martyrs. By choosing to live a righteous life, we can cultivate a deeper level of intimacy with God, and a deeper level of love in our marriage.
