These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Choosing God’s Will over Winning
During conflict, one issue can become so important that each spouse begins seeking victory rather than unity, truth, or holiness. The focusing illusion narrows the argument until protecting pride seems more urgent than honoring God or preserving the relationship.
Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. (Matthew 6:10 KJV)
Jesus teaches believers to desire God’s kingdom and will above personal control. In marriage, both spouses must place their preferences beneath God’s authority. The central question is not, “How can I win?” but, “What response would please our Lord?”
Before continuing a disagreement, pause and pray this verse together. Ask whether either spouse is defending pride, convenience, control, or resentment. Search Scripture for principles that govern the issue, and be willing to surrender any position that conflicts with God’s revealed will.
Practice yielding in small matters where no biblical command is involved. This weakens the habit of selfish control and strengthens mutual consideration. In serious matters, pursue truth with humility, patience, wise counsel, and a shared desire to obey God.
Prayer: Lord, let Your kingdom come and Your will be done in our home. Deliver us from pride and the need to win. Give us humble hearts that seek truth, love, and obedience above personal preference. Amen.
Surrendering to God does not make marriage weaker. It gives the relationship a trustworthy authority above both spouses. When husband and wife sincerely seek His will, conflict can become an opportunity for humility, wisdom, and deeper unity.
