These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective. (James 5:16)
James 5:16 reminds us of the importance of confessing our sins to one another and praying for one another. One powerful example of this from the Old Testament can be found in the story of King David and the prophet Nathan in 2 Samuel 12. When Nathan confronts David about his adultery with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband Uriah, David confesses his sins and repents, saying, “I have sinned against the Lord” (2 Samuel 12:13).
This example shows us the power of confessing our sins to another person and the importance of accountability in our relationships. David’s confession and repentance led to forgiveness and restoration, as seen in God’s promise to him through Nathan, “The Lord has put away your sin; you shall not die” (2 Samuel 12:13).
Another example of confession of sins can be found in the New Testament, in the story of the woman taken in adultery in John 8:1-11. Jesus defends the woman from being stoned by the religious leaders and says to her, “Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more” (John 8:11). Jesus’ words not only offered the woman forgiveness but also a call to repentance, to “sin no more” which means to turn away from her sins and to walk in righteousness.
Moreover, Confession of sins is not only for the forgiveness of sins but also for the healing and restoration of relationships. Confession of sins is an act of humility and repentance, recognizing that we have not only offended God but also those around us. Confession helps to break down walls of separation and brings reconciliation to relationships.
In conclusion, confessing our sins is a vital aspect of our Christian walk. It allows us to experience the forgiveness, healing, and restoration that comes through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. It requires humility, honesty, and openness before God and others, and it helps to keep our relationship with God and others healthy and strong.
