These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners. Purify your hearts, you double-minded. (James 4:8)
James 4:8 says, “Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” This verse is encouraging believers to take responsibility for their actions, seek cleansing from sin and to cleanse their hearts and minds of any impurities or inconsistencies. Here are ten practical applications of this verse for marriages:
Recognize and confess any sins in your marriage. James 5:16 says, “Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” Confession is a crucial step in washing our hands from sin and purifying our hearts.
Cultivate a pure heart by meditating on God’s word. Psalms 119:9 says, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.” When we fill our minds with God’s truth, it helps to overcome any impurities.
Seek forgiveness from your spouse. Ephesians 4:32 says, “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” When we seek forgiveness from our spouse, it helps to wash our hands from any wrongs that we have committed.
Cultivate a spirit of humility. James 4:6 says, “God oppose the proud but shows favor to the humble.” When we humble ourselves and recognize our need for God, it helps to purify our hearts.
Be mindful of your actions. Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” When we are mindful of our actions and strive to make them pleasing to God, it helps to keep our hands clean from sin.
Seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. John 16:13 says, “But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.” The Holy Spirit can help us to recognize and confess our sins, and to purify our hearts.
Seek wisdom from God. James 1:5 says, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” Wisdom from God can help us to make good decisions and to keep our hearts and minds pure.
Practice forgiveness. Colossians 3:13 says, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Forgiveness is a powerful tool in purifying our hearts and minds and making peace with our spouse.
Guard against the influence of the world. James 4:4 says, “You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.” When we allow the world to influence our thoughts and actions, it can lead to impurities in our hearts.
Cultivate a heart of gratitude. 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Being thankful for our blessings and acknowledging God’s role in our lives can help to purify our hearts and minds.
It is important to note that the Greek word for “sinners” in James 4:8 is “hamartolos” which means “a sinner by act” or “guilty of breaking the law.” The Greek word for “double-minded” is “dipsychos” which means “double-souled” or “two-minded.” This verse is reminding us that as believers, we should be aware of our actions and take responsibility for them, and also to have a consistent and pure heart and mind towards God.
In summary, James 4:8 is reminding us to wash our hands from sin by recognizing and confessing our sins, meditating on God’s word, seeking forgiveness from our spouse, cultivating a spirit of humility, and being mindful of our actions. Also, it is reminding us to purify our hearts and minds by seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, seeking wisdom from God, practicing forgiveness, guarding against the influence of the world, and cultivating a heart of gratitude. By doing so, we can have a clean conscience, a pure heart and mind, and a closer relationship with God.
