Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report: if there is any virtue and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. (Philippians 4:8)

James reminds us to focus on the things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, and of good report in our lives, and to let these positive things guide our thoughts and actions. One way to apply this passage to our marriages is to strive to make these values a part of our daily lives together.

  • “alēthēs” (true) - meaning genuine, true, or real
  • “semna” (honorable) - meaning respectable, dignified, or worthy of respect
  • “dikaia” (just) - meaning right, fair, or equitable
  • “hagnē" (pure) - meaning clean, pure, or chaste
  • “prosphile” (lovely) - meaning pleasing, attractive, or lovely
  • “euangelia” (of good report) - meaning good news or a message of hope

Here are some practical examples of how we can put these values into practice and the positive results they can bring to our relationships:

  1. Truth: Being truthful with our spouse in all things, whether it’s sharing our thoughts and feelings or being honest about mistakes we’ve made, can help create a foundation of trust and respect in our marriage. This can lead to a deeper level of intimacy and understanding between us.

  2. Honor: Showing respect and dignity towards our spouse, whether it’s in the way we speak to them or the way we treat them in public, can help create a culture of honor and respect within our marriage. This can lead to a more peaceful and harmonious relationship where both partners feel valued and appreciated.

  3. Justice: Being fair and just in our interactions with our spouse, whether it’s in the way we divide household responsibilities or in the way we handle conflicts, can help create a sense of balance and fairness in our marriage. This can lead to a more equitable and satisfying relationship where both partners feel heard and understood.

  4. Purity: Cultivating a pure and chaste relationship with our spouse, whether it’s by avoiding temptation or by being mindful of the way we talk and think about our relationship, can help create a deeper sense of intimacy and connection in our marriage. This can lead to a more fulfilling and meaningful relationship where both partners feel loved and respected.

  5. Loveliness: Appreciating and finding beauty in our spouse, whether it’s through verbal affirmations or through small acts of kindness, can help create a culture of love and appreciation within our marriage. This can lead to a more joyful and satisfying relationship where both partners feel valued and cherished.

  6. Good report: Focusing on the good and positive aspects of our relationship, whether it’s by expressing gratitude or by sharing good news, can help create a culture of positivity and hope within our marriage. This can lead to a more uplifting and encouraging relationship where both partners feel supported and encouraged.

By focusing on these values and putting them into practice in our daily lives, we can strengthen our marriages and create a more loving and harmonious relationship with our spouse.

Questions to ponder

  • What dishonorable, unjust, impure, unlovely, and bad things have I allowed myself to think about?

  • How can I take those bad thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ?

  • What are some honorable, just, pure, lovely, and good things I can think about instead?
