These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. (Philippians 2:5-8 NLT
I have shared this verse with hundreds of husbands. Most have read Ephesians 5:24 so they have an expectation of the divine privilege of their wife submitting to them as unto the Lord. But most have never considered how Jesus Christ humbled himself.
I always ask them to read this verse aloud. Every single time, they start valiantly with “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” And then I rudely interrupt them and ask them to read it again. Sometimes it takes five, six, or more times before they understand the significance.
Then, I ask them to read the rest of the verse. And I rudely interrupt them after every line. And ask them to read the first sentence again.
By the end of the passage, they are usually very frustrated with me. Sometimes outright angry. But that’s okay because they probably won’t ever forget that they need to have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
