Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

Do all things without complaining and arguing (Philippians 2:14a)

The young couple standing before their friends at the altar of their marriage never suspects that their happiness will devolve into continual bitter complaining and arguing. And yet it does for many. Maybe it has for you.

In marriage, it’s easy to fall into the habit of complaining and arguing. We may feel like our spouse doesn’t understand us or that they are not meeting our needs. But as believers, we are called to a higher standard.

Philippians 2:14 tells us to do all things without complaining and disputing. This doesn’t mean that we have to agree on everything or that we can’t express our needs and concerns. But it does mean that we should approach conflicts and challenges with a spirit of humility and grace.

Instead of complaining and arguing, try to focus on finding solutions and understanding your spouse’s perspective. When we choose to communicate in a respectful and loving manner, we create a more positive and harmonious atmosphere in our marriage.

As you go through this week, try to practice this verse in your daily interactions with your spouse. Remember that complaining and arguing will only lead to resentment and division, but humility and grace will bring you closer together.
