These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Confession, Prayer, and Healing
Hidden faults and guarded defensiveness can keep wounds open. Each spouse may focus upon the other person’s wrong while minimizing personal responsibility. Without confession, prayer becomes distant and healing is repeatedly delayed.
Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. (James 5:16 KJV)
James joins honest confession with mutual prayer. Confession brings wrongdoing into the light without excuse, while prayer turns both spouses toward God’s power and mercy. Healing grows where humility replaces concealment and accusation.
Confess your own fault specifically: name the action, acknowledge the harm, and avoid adding “but.” Ask what restitution or change is needed. Then pray for your spouse’s healing rather than merely seeking relief from personal guilt.
Make confession timely and proportionate. Do not save minor offenses for future ammunition. For serious patterns, involve qualified pastoral or professional help and establish accountability. Healing ordinarily requires both prayer and sustained evidence of change.
Prayer: Lord, give us courage to confess our faults honestly and pray for one another sincerely. Remove defensiveness and hidden resentment. Bring healing through truth, repentance, forgiveness, wise accountability, and Your gracious power. Amen.
Honest confession need not destroy a marriage; concealment often causes greater harm. When truth is joined with repentance and prayer, God can begin healing wounds, rebuilding integrity, and restoring spiritual closeness.

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. (Proverbs 30:5)
