Daily marriage devotionals for growing godly marriages

Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

Wives must accept the authority of your husband; Husbands must give honor to your wife (1 Peter 3:1-7)

Peter wrote to Christians scattered abroad and suffering terrible persecution. But even in those difficult times, there were interpersonal problems. So, he gave clear instructions to people living in all kinds of circumstances.

Please read the special instructions to married Christians (1 Peter 3:1-7). And don’t skip over the phrase, “In the same way,” because it refers to the exhortation to follow the example of Jesus Christ suffering for us (1 Peter 2:21-25). This is almost the same wording as Philippians 2:5-11), which says you must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.

Next steps for wife

In that same way, wives must accept the authority of your husbands. You must submit to your husband as Jesus Christ submitted to his heavenly father. And in so doing, you may influence your husbands by your pure and reverent lives.

  • Your beauty won’t sustain your marriage, your style won’t sustain your marriage — just consider all the Hollywood stars with failed marriages

  • But the inward beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit that accepts the authority of your husband — these will make your marriage thrive, prosper, and flourish

Next steps for husband

In that same way, husbands must give honor to your wives. You must treat your wife with understanding as an equal partner. You must love your wife as Christ loved the church (Ephesians 5:25). With a sacrificial love that always yields.

  • Your leadership without benevolence of bestowing honor won’t sustain a marriage — that’s dictatorship and it never ends well

  • But godly sacrificial leading the way by demonstrating the love of God who died for your sins — will make your marriage thrive, prosper, and flourish

Thoughts to ponder

Stop everything else! Get this right first! Then rejoice and carry on.

Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. (Proverbs 30:5)

Going beyond marriage devotionals

  • Leave and cleave – God gave husbands instruction to leave and cleave because they need to break ties with their birth-families to forge their marriages

  • Biblical relationship checkup – This Biblical relationship checkup helps couples find where they are on God’s map of a successful marriage and find direction for improvement
  • Help for hurting marriages – When I am weak, then I am strong. Help for hurting marriages is found in the wisdom of these Bible scriptures. Apply them as often as needed.
