Bible scripture study comparing spiritual things with spiritual

There are many fringe Christian groups who use a misapplication of this verse to justify their own circular reasoning of the scriptures…

Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth;  comparing spiritual things with spiritual.  (1 Corinthians 2:13 KJV)

These groups use this verse to teach a strange form of study and teaching that only uses other verses to explain verses. Most of them mistranslate the verse to be “comparing scripture with scripture.” This ends up sounding like Michael Constantine’s character Gus Portokalos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding trying to explain how the root word of any word is from the Greek…

Gus Portokalos: Give me a word, any word, and I show you that the root of that word is Greek.
Gus Portokalos: Kimono, kimono, kimono. Ha! Of course! Kimono is come from the Greek word himona, is mean winter. So, what do you wear in the wintertime to stay warm? A robe. You see: robe, kimono. There you go!
Gus Portokalos: You know, the root of the word Miller is a Greek word. Miller come from the Greek word “milo,” which is mean “apple,” so there you go. As many of you know, our name, Portokalos, is come from the Greek word “portokali,” which mean “orange.” So, okay? Here tonight, we have, ah, apple and orange. We all different, but in the end, we all fruit.

Let’s look more closely at what this verse really says. Instead of plucking it out of context and “explaining” it, let’s get a running start from the beginning and see what the Apostle Paul was saying…

For Christ didn’t send me to baptize, but to preach the Good News— and not with clever speech, for fear that the cross of Christ would lose its power.

The message of the cross is foolish to those who are headed for destruction! But we who are being saved know it is the very power of God. As the Scriptures say,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise
and discard the intelligence of the intelligent.” (Isa 29:14)
So where does this leave the philosophers, the scholars, and the world’s brilliant debaters? God has made the wisdom of this world look foolish.  Since God in his wisdom saw to it that the world would never know him through human wisdom, he has used our foolish preaching to save those who believe. (1 Corinthians 1:17-21 NLT)

When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters,  I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God’s secret plan.  For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified. I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling.  And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.  (1 Corinthians 2:1-5 NLT)

Yet when I am among mature believers, I do speak with words of wisdom,  but not the kind of wisdom that belongs to this world or to the rulers of this world, who are soon forgotten. No, the wisdom we speak of is the mystery of God—his plan that was previously hidden, even though he made it for our ultimate glory before the world began. But the rulers of this world have not understood it; if they had, they would not have crucified our glorious Lord. That is what the Scriptures mean when they say,
“No eye has seen, no ear has heard,
          and no mind has imagined

     what God has prepared
for those who love him.” (Isa 64:4)
But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit.  For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit.  And we have received God’s Spirit (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.  (1 Corinthians 2:6-12 NLT)

When we tell you these things, we do not use words that come from human wisdom. Instead, we speak words given to us by the Spirit, using the Spirit’s words to explain spiritual truths.  But people who aren’t spiritual can’t receive these truths from God’s Spirit. It all sounds foolish to them and they can’t understand it, for only those who are spiritual can understand what the Spirit means. Those who are spiritual can evaluate all things, but they themselves cannot be evaluated by others. For,
“Who can know the LORD’s thoughts?
Who knows enough to teach him?”
But we understand these things, for we have the mind of Christ.  (1 Corinthians 2:13-16 NLT)

The Apostle Paul is teaching a much more important and much grander concept than what these groups would have you believe.

They shroud their false doctrine in circular reasoning based on strange word studies. Most of these kinds of groups rely on a single translation of the Bible, often using the obsolete words and obsolete phrases in the King James Version, to bolster their teaching. If you are in a group that wants you to rewrite words in your Bible, if you are in a group that wants you to redefine words in your Bible, if you are in a group that constantly wants you to write notes in your Bible about what passages really mean, if you are in a group that skips over verses and circles back to the same verses over and over, please do the godly thing and just walk away (Proverbs 1:15; Proverbs 4:27)

This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit,  explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words.  (1 Corinthians 2:13 NIV)

which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit,  combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words.  (1 Corinthians 2:13 NASB)

We don’t speak about these things using teachings that are based on intellectual arguments like people do. Instead, we use the Spirit’s teachings.  We explain spiritual things to those who have the Spirit.  (1 Corinthians 2:13 GWT)

Anyone who teaches that the Apostle Paul meant you can only understand the Bible by tortuous study of the book itself is dangerously close to those described in 2 Peter 3:5 as…
• deliberately forgot
• deliberately overlook
• willfully ignore
• willing ignorant

2:10-16 God has revealed true wisdom to us by his Spirit. Here is a proof of the Divine authority of the Holy Scriptures, 2Pe 1:21. In proof of the Divinity of the Holy Ghost, observe, that he knows all things, and he searches all things, even the deep things of God. No one can know the things of God, but his Holy Spirit, who is one with the Father and the Son, and who makes known Divine mysteries to his church. This is most clear testimony, both to the real Godhead and the distinct person of the Holy Spirit. The apostles were not guided by worldly principles. They had the revelation of these things from the Spirit of God, and the saving impression of them from the same Spirit. These things they declared in plain, simple language, taught by the Holy Spirit, totally different from the affected oratory or enticing words of man’s wisdom. The natural man, the wise man of the world, receives not the things of the Spirit of God. The pride of carnal reasoning is really as much opposed to spirituality, as the basest sensuality. The sanctified mind discerns the real beauties of holiness, but the power of discerning and judging about common and natural things is not lost. But the carnal man is a stranger to the principles, and pleasures, and actings of the Divine life. The spiritual man only, is the person to whom God gives the knowledge of his will. How little have any known of the mind of God by natural power! And the apostles were enabled by his Spirit to make known his mind. In the Holy Scriptures, the mind of Christ, and the mind of God in Christ, are fully made known to us. It is the great privilege of Christians, that they have the mind of Christ revealed to them by his Spirit. They experience his sanctifying power in their hearts, and bring forth good fruits in their lives. Matthew Henry Commentary

God has not left us without resources to understand his will, we have the Bible, the voice of creation, the Holy Spirit, and the mind of Christ

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.
     The skies display his craftsmanship.
Day after day they continue to speak;
night after night they make him known.
 They speak without a sound or word;
     their voice is never heard.

Yet their message has gone throughout the earth,
and their words to all the world. (Psalm 16:1-4 NLT)

Jesus replied, “All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them. Anyone who doesn’t love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me. I am telling you these things now while I am still with you.  But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.  (John 14:23-26 NLT)

“Who has known the mind of the Lord so that he can teach him?”  However, we have the mind of Christ.  (1 Corinthians 2:16 GWT)

But you are not like that, for the Holy One has given you his Spirit, and all of you know the truth.  So I am writing to you not because you don’t know the truth but because you know the difference between truth and lies. And who is a liar? Anyone who says that Jesus is not the Christ. Anyone who denies the Father and the Son is an antichrist. Anyone who denies the Son doesn’t have the Father, either. But anyone who acknowledges the Son has the Father also. (1 John 2:20 NLT)

I am writing these things to warn you about those who want to lead you astray.  But you have received the Holy Spirit, and he lives within you, so you don’t need anyone to teach you what is true.  For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know, and what he teaches is true—it is not a lie. So just as he has taught you, remain in fellowship with Christ. (1 John 2:26-27 NLT)

Finally, let me leave you with this warning from the Apostle Peter…

Therefore, I will always remind you about these things—even though you already know them and are standing firm in the truth you have been taught. And it is only right that I should keep on reminding you as long as I live. For our Lord Jesus Christ has shown me that I must soon leave this earthly life, so I will work hard to make sure you always remember these things after I am gone.
For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.  We saw his majestic splendor with our own eyes when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain.
Because of that experience, we have even greater confidence in the message proclaimed by the prophets. You must pay close attention to what they wrote, for their words are like a lamp shining in a dark place—until the Day dawns, and Christ the Morning Star shines in your hearts.  Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.  (2 Peter 1:12-21 NLT)
