In the physical world, even the smallest flicker of light penetrates and conquers darkness. This powerful truth highlights an important spiritual reality presented in the Bible. As believers, we understand that light, both literal and metaphorical, holds significant meaning in Scripture. It represents truth, purity, knowledge, and most importantly, the presence and character of God. Therefore, it dispels darkness in all its literal and metaphorical forms, such as lies and falsehoods, immorality, ignorance, and the lack of God’s presence.
Genesis 1:3-4 – “And God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light. God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.” From the onset of creation, light is shown as an agent of God’s goodness, separating and distinguishing itself from darkness. The Hebrew word for light in this verse is “אוֹר” (or), symbolizing order, purity, and divine energy.
John 1:5 – “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” This verse speaks of Jesus Christ, the Living Word, as the Light. The Greek term for overcome, “καταλαμβάνω” (katalambanó), implies an aggressive action, yet darkness cannot comprehend or extinguish this Light. It signifies the absolute inability of evil to overcome Christ’s righteousness.
Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead, they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Here, Jesus calls His followers to be lights in the world, symbolizing visibility, influence, and the responsibility to illuminate moral and spiritual truth. The imperative to let our light “shine before others” emphasizes active, visible faith, living out Christ’s teachings so compellingly that it leads others to acknowledge and glorify God.
John 8:12 – “When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ‘I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'” Jesus declares Himself as the definitive source of spiritual light. Following Him means a life illuminated by His truth and presence, free from the blindness and confusion that spiritual darkness brings. The phrase “light of life” implies that this illumination is not merely knowledge or moral guidance but the very essence of spiritual life and eternal truth.
2 Corinthians 4:6 – “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.” This verse connects the creation narrative to the revelation of Jesus Christ. It highlights that the same God who commanded physical light into existence also illuminates our hearts spiritually through Christ.
Ephesians 5:8 – “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” This verse emphasizes the transformation that occurs when one accepts Christ. Believers are not just in the light but are themselves ‘light’ (Greek: “φῶς”, phos), called to reflect God’s character.
Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” The Psalmist uses the metaphor of light as guidance. The Word of God provides direction and clarity, guiding believers through the moral and spiritual darkness of this world.
Just as a single candle conquers darkness in a room, the light of Christ within us conquers spiritual darkness. We are called to be bearers of this Light, reflecting the truth and love of Christ in a world often shrouded in spiritual obscurity. Our lives, illuminated by His Word and Spirit, can guide others out of darkness and into His marvelous light.
The smallest flicker of light’s triumph over darkness is a powerful illustration of a greater spiritual truth. As believers, we hold this light in our hearts – the light of Christ, which darkness can never overcome. May we walk faithfully as children of light, carrying this hope and truth into every corner of our lives.

Hello!
You have a post, dated 2012, with a study by Robert Harrison titled “Authority, Order, and Motivation,” but the study was removed from your site for containing false doctrine. I grew up in a group that was led by Harrison and thus adhered to his teachings, and it wrought havoc on my life and relationship with God. Praise the name of Christ, I’ve been freed from that life, but I’m studying the teachings and history of his group (and the related assemblies) in an attempt to better understand how it began, and how to help Christians still trapped in it.
I know this is a long shot, considering the post was removed over ten years ago, but I was wondering if there’s any way you could help me track down the study. I’m sorry to leave all this in a comment here, but the form on your contact page appears to be broken, and I’m not sure how else to establish contact.
Thank you so much for your time!
Greetings Sarah,
I appreciate you taking the time to write. I am saddened for the havoc that the false doctrine caused in your life. But I am sincerely grateful that God has been able to help you be freed from the man-made fear-based false doctrine of that group. I appreciate the irony that your response is a comment to “The Smallest Flicker of Light Conquers Darkness.” I will respond to you privately, however I wanted to be clear that “Authority, Order, and Motivation” wasn’t the cause for things going wrong in that group, but it was the result of things having gone wrong for many years before that.
With Christian love and prayers,
David & Rachel
This truth has always comforted me, especially when people start doom and gloom talking about darkness taking over. Light always wins. And in God’s world, righteousness always triumphs over evil. It may not seem like it right now and evil may win some battles. But I’ve read the end of the book, which assures me that darkness and evil lose in the end. So, I will keep my candle trimmed and burning bright where I’m planted with all glory to God.
