Rightly Dividing the Great Commission

It would be presumptions for me to think this post could resolve thousands of years of arguments about the Great Commission. But I have found that most honest theological questions can be resolved by reading the scriptures with the help of the Holy Spirit. So let’s try.

I am not going to make deep theological arguments or cherry-pick verses out of context to prove a point. Instead, I am going to present the entire context of the entire passages about the great commission and let the Holy Spirit work in your heart to understand the whole counsel of God (Acts 20:27). It all comes down to who is in charge of your theology: you or God.

Some have complained that my posts are too long and have too many verses. I’m sorry but I don’t apologize. My words aren’t worth much unless they help give the sense of the scriptures (Nehemiah 8:8). God’s word is living and powerful (Hebrews 4:12) so it is able to thoroughly furnish you unto all good works (2 Timothy 3:16-17) so that we can be approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15).

I am going to include the text from the King James Bible because it is in the Public Domain but I highly recommend that you follow the links below and read in a good modern translation like New Living Translation, or New American Standard, or New International Version, to get the sense without the overload of Old English terminology.

Written by Trustworthy Eyewitness

For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. (2 Peter 1:16-18)

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2 Peter 1:19-21)

Jesus Teaches about the Church

During his earthly ministry, Jesus taught the disciples about the future. He told them he would build his church. These were the same disciples that Jesus would later teach the Great Commission. They didn’t start the Church at this time. They didn’t even understand what Jesus meant (cp, John 12:16; John 13:28) until much later. Some people still don’t understand what Jesus meant and they still argue about it.

When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter,  and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.  And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. (Matthew 16:13-20)

After the Resurrection

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. (1 Corinthians 15:3-7)

Jesus Appears to the Disciples — The Great Commission (according to John)

Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord. Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you:  as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.  And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost: Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them; and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained. (John 20:19-23)

Jesus Opens the Meaning of the Scriptures (according to Luke)

Jesus teaches the Great Commission to the same disciples who are to wait in Jerusalem until they be endued with power from on high. When that happens, on the Day of Pentecost, it is generally considered to be the start of the Church.

And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me. Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures, And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:  And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.  And ye are witnesses of these things. And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high. (Luke 24:44-49)

The Great Commission (according to Mark)

Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen. And he said unto them,  Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. (Mark 16:14-18)

There are many examples of this great commission prophecy being fulfilled in the first few years of the early church. These gifts were part of the special outpouring of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and prophets in the early church during the time when the scriptures were being written. They have ceased now because we don’t need any new revelation until the second coming of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 13:10).

And when they were escaped, then they knew that the island was called Melita. And the barbarous people shewed us no little kindness: for they kindled a fire, and received us every one, because of the present rain, and because of the cold. And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks, and laid them on the fire, there came a viper out of the heat, and fastened on his hand. And when the barbarians saw the venomous beast hang on his hand, they said among themselves, No doubt this man is a murderer, whom, though he hath escaped the sea, yet vengeance suffereth not to live. And he shook off the beast into the fire, and felt no harm. Howbeit they looked when he should have swollen, or fallen down dead suddenly: but after they had looked a great while, and saw no harm come to him, they changed their minds, and said that he was a god. (Acts 28:1-6)

Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard, lest at any time we should let them slip. For if the word spoken by angels was stedfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompence of reward; How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him; God also bearing them witness, both with signs and wonders, and with divers miracles, and gifts of the Holy Ghost, according to his own will? (Hebrews 2:1-4)

The Great Commission (according to Matthew)

There has been dispute over whether this Great Commission is the same message of salvation as preached by Paul because of the wording of the baptism. Remember all the fullness of the godhead dwells bodily in Jesus Christ (Colossians 1:19; Colossians 2:9) so the meaning is the same.

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them. And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted. And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying,  All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you:  and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28:16-20)

The Ascension (according to Luke)

When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel? And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.  But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  (Acts 1:6-8)

And when he had spoken these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked stedfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel; Which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven. (Acts 1:9-11)

And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven. And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy: And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen. (Luke 24:50-53)

The Ascension (according to Mark)

The disciples may have started preaching the great commission message before they were endued with power from the Holy Spirit. Or these last 2 sentences of Mark’s gospel may be a general summary of what happened without being specific about the timeline.

So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.  And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following.  Amen. (Mark 16:19-20)

The Holy Spirit preaches the Great Commission at Pentecost

These same disciples, whom Jesus taught about the Church (Matthew 16), have now received that gift of the Holy Spirit, which they were told to wait for in Jerusalem (Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24), so they proclaim the Great Commission, through the power of the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28; Mark 16; Luke 24), as they were instructed.

And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.  And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.  (Acts 2:1-4)

And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?  Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.  And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. (Acts 2:5-13)

The Great Commission Gospel Preached to Everybody

If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of  the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven;  whereof I Paul am made a minister; (Colossians 1:23 KJV)

if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.  This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.  (Colossians 1:23 NIV)

But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.  The Good News has been preached all over the world, and I, Paul, have been appointed as God’s servant to proclaim it.  (Colossians 1:23 NLT)

Rightly Dividing the Great Commission

Who was speaking — Jesus Christ, himself, gave the command, “Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16)

On whose authority — Jesus Christ said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations … and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. (Matthew 28)

To whom was he speaking — “Afterward he [Jesus Christ] appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.” (Mark 16)

For what period of time — Jesus Christ told them, “tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.” (Luke 24)

The harvest is great but the workers are few

It is our privilege and responsibility to continue the great commission of sharing the gospel until Jesus Christ returns.

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease among the people. (Matthew 9:35)

But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd. Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few; Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest. (Matthew 9:36-38)

Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?  For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.  For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. (1 Corinthians 1:20-24)
