These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. (Galatians 6:2)
This verse reminds us of the importance of being there for one another, especially in times of need. It speaks to the idea of being a support and encouragement to our spouse, helping them to carry their burdens and challenges.
As a married couple, it is important to remember that we are in this life together and that we should be there for one another through thick and thin. This means being willing to listen and offer words of comfort and encouragement when our spouse is going through a difficult time. It also means being willing to help out and pitch in when our spouse is overwhelmed or struggling with a particular task.
Here are 5 practical ways to carry your spouse’s burdens without growing tired in your marriage:
Offer a listening ear. When your spouse is struggling, give them your full attention and offer a listening ear.
Share your spouse’s burden. Work together to find solutions and support each other through difficult times.
Encourage your spouse to rely on God. Remind your spouse that God is always with them and can give them the strength and comfort they need to overcome their challenges.
Be a source of comfort. Offer physical and emotional support to your spouse when they are struggling.
Pray for your spouse regularly. Ask God to give you the strength and wisdom to support your spouse and to help them overcome their challenges.
In the Greek, the word for “burden” in Galatians 6:2 is “phortion,” which means a load, a burden, or a task. In marriage, it means supporting and caring for our spouse, especially in difficult times.
One way to practice bearing one another’s burdens in our marriage is by asking ourselves how we can be a support and encouragement to our spouse. This might involve offering a listening ear, helping with household chores, or simply being present for one another. We can also pray for one another, asking God to give us the strength and grace to be a support and encouragement to our spouse. By bearing one another’s burdens in this way, we can experience a deeper level of connection and unity in our marriage.
Another way to bear one another’s burdens is to support our spouse exercising the ministry of their gifts of the Holy Spirit, which might be completely different than your own. This may mean getting out of your comfort zone to enable them to fulfil their God-given desires for service. But instead of getting frustrated about the bother, get excited about the growth this will bring to both of you.

This is an ongoing labor of love because these marriage devotionals will never be finished, but we have to start somewhere, so we will update often. We appreciate your support and prayers because this is a work of God not us. And please forgive us because we have never found a verse that doesn’t apply to marriage somehow.
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. (Proverbs 30:5)
