Daily marriage devotionals for growing Christian marriages

These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)

Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21 WEB)

In the first chapter of James’ letter to Jewish believers, who were suffering trouble in their personal lives and religious persecution in foreign lands, he constantly returns to the theme doing the right things rather than just talking about them.

In this passage, James examines the weeds that can grow up in our lives almost without us noticing. But they choke out our Christian blessings. So, we need to be diligent in pulling them out by the roots and getting rid of them.

But the worst thing we can do is pull out the weeds and leave fertile ground for more weeds. This can happen to good church-going Christians. They can hear good sermons on Bible truths and walk out of church without any change.

  • The test of real faith is that it changes us. Therefore, we need to actively allow God to plant his word into our souls. And it will change the way we think (Romans 12:1-2) unless we are just fooling ourselves.

  • Check up on yourself. (2 Corinthians 13:5) Is your marriage choked by filthy wicked weeds that keep you from doing the things you know you need to be doing? Stop!

  • Stop doing these things (they will destroy the joy of your salvation) – Stop doing these things. They will not help you grow in grace and knowledge. They will destroy the joy of your salvation.
