These daily marriage devotionals are compiled from verses that we have shared with Christian couples in many counseling sessions over many years. Please read one per day and meditate on how it applies to your marriage. (Note: if you are not certain you are a Christian, please read The Sinner’s Prayer)
And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. (Exodus 34:5)
And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. And the LORD passed by before him, and proclaimed, The LORD, The LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the children’s children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. (Exodus 34:5-7)
In this verse, God reveals several of His attributes - His mercy, His forgiveness, and His justice. These are qualities that should be reflected in our marriages as well.
Mercy is the quality of being kind and compassionate, especially towards those who are suffering or in need. As spouses, we should strive to be merciful towards each other, showing kindness and compassion in times of hardship or struggle.
Forgiveness is the act of granting mercy and pardon to someone who has wronged us. In marriage, it is inevitable that we will hurt or disappoint each other at times. It is important for both spouses to be quick to forgive, rather than holding grudges or dwelling on past hurts.
Justice is the quality of being fair and right. In marriage, it is important to seek fairness and righteousness in all of our actions and decisions. This includes being honest with each other and holding each other accountable when necessary.
As you and your spouse strive to reflect the attributes of God in your marriage, remember to be merciful, forgiving, and just. Seek to show kindness and compassion towards each other, and be quick to grant mercy and forgiveness when needed. Work towards fairness and righteousness in all that you do, and seek to honor God in your relationship.
If you miss one, two, or many days, don’t worry about it and don’t try to catch up. Just start where you are and keep going. We have found the Holy Spirit can prompt you to return to just the passage you need for today.
This is an ongoing labor of love because these marriage devotionals will never be finished, but we have to start somewhere, so we will update often. We appreciate your support and prayers because this is a work of God not us. And please forgive us because we have never found a verse that doesn’t apply to marriage somehow.
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. (Proverbs 30:5)
