I commend you to God and to the word of his grace (Acts 20:32)

Every once in a while I consider that this might be the last post I ever write. God knows the number of days in my life, which is probably somewhere between 1 and 29000 (do the math). I consider what would be the last thing I could ever tell anyone. What would I commend to them? For more than 40 years, it has always been the same thing that the Apostle Paul told the Ephesians when he departed from them for the last time.

And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified. (Acts 20:32)

This commitment is consistent with other commendations from Paul’s life as demonstrated in his last letters to Timothy and Titus…

This charge  I commit unto thee, son Timothy,  according to the prophecies which went before on thee, that thou by them mightest war a good warfare; Holding faith, and a good conscience; which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwreck:
(1 Timothy 1:18-19)

And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses,  the same commit thou to faithful men,  who shall be able to teach others also. (2 Timothy 2:2)

Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began; But hath in due times manifested his word through preaching, which is  committed unto me  according to the commandment of God our Saviour; (Titus 1:1-3)

This is a dangerous world. Christians have a powerful enemy. The world hates them for Jesus Christ’s sake. Therefore they need to turn to the word.

Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness  the engrafted word,  which is able to save your souls. (James 1:21)

For  the word of God  is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (Hebrews 4:12)

That was  the true Light,  which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. (John 1:9)

I commend you to this word, which is able to build you up. It is able to give you an eternal inheritance…

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. (Ephesians 2:19-22)

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;  For the perfecting of the saints,  for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love,  may grow up into him in all things,  which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love. (Ephesians 4:11-16)

Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth,  but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.  (Ephesians 4:29)

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:  Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith,  as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving. (Colossians 2:6-7)

That last verse is from one of my favorite books of the Bible. I pray that my last words to anyone are: I commend you to read my 7 favorite books: John, Acts, Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, and Colossians.
