Living in Jesus, the Light of the World

The Bible teaches us that Jesus is “the light of the world.” And Christians are commanded to walk in this light, which symbolizes purity and truth. Let’s consider the following scriptures to understand this beautiful metaphor and discover practical ways to apply it to our daily lives.

Understanding the Light

1. Jesus as the Light of the World

Jesus declares Himself as the “Light of the World” (John 8:12 & John 9:5), meaning He guides us through life’s challenges and spiritual darkness just as light guides us in the darkness. In John 1:4-9, it is explained that Jesus is the true Light that enlightens everyone, and His light is everlasting and cannot be overcome by darkness. Additionally, in John 12:35, Jesus urges us to walk in the light now, highlighting the importance of following Him to stay away from the darkness of sin.

Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12 WEB)

I must work the works of him who sent me while it is day. The night is coming, when no one can work. 5While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” (John 9:4-5 WEB)

In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness hasn’t overcome it. There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came as a witness, that he might testify about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but was sent that he might testify about the light. The true light that enlightens everyone was coming into the world. (John 1:4-9 WEB)

Jesus therefore said to them, “Yet a little while the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, that darkness doesn’t overtake you. He who walks in the darkness doesn’t know where he is going. (John 12:35 WEB)

2. Believers as Light to the World

Believers are called to be the light of the world (Matthew 5:14), similar to a bright city on a hill that cannot be hidden. This means our lives should reflect God’s glory and draw others to Him. Philippians 2:15 describes us as pure and blameless children of God who shine like stars in a corrupt and sinful generation. Revelation 21:24 points to the future when all nations will walk in God’s light, showing that our current role as believers is a glimpse of God’s ultimate plan for His people.

“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavor, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men. You are the light of the world. A city located on a hill can’t be hidden. Neither do you light a lamp and put it under a measuring basket, but on a stand; and it shines to all who are in the house. Even so, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven. (Matthew 5:13-16 WEB)

Do all things without complaining and arguing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without defect in the middle of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you are seen as lights in the world, holding up the word of life, that I may have something to boast in the day of Christ that I didn’t run in vain nor labor in vain. (Philippians 2:14-16 WEB)

I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God the Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. The city has no need for the sun or moon to shine, for the very glory of God illuminated it and its lamp is the Lamb. The nations will walk in its light. The kings of the earth bring the glory and honor of the nations into it. Its gates will in no way be shut by day (for there will be no night there), and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it so that they may enter. There will in no way enter into it anything profane, or one who causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life. (Revelation 21:22-27 WEB)

3. Walking in the Light of the World

Walking in the light involves living honestly, loving one another, and allowing Jesus to purify us from sin (1 John 1:7). Isaiah 2:5 and Psalm 89:15 call us to walk in the light of the LORD, which means living in a way that honors God and reflects His presence. Ephesians 5:8-14 teaches that as children of light, we must live righteously by avoiding sinful behaviors and embracing what is pure and good.

But if we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son, cleanses us from all sin. (1 John 1:7 WEB)

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall come to pass in the last days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all nations shall flow unto it. And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD. (Isaiah 2:1-5 KJV)

Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne. Unfailing love and truth walk before you as attendants. Happy are those who hear the joyful call to worship, for they will walk in the light of your presence, LORD. (Psalm 89:14-15 NLT)

For you were once darkness, but are now light in the Lord. Walk as children of light, for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth, proving what is well pleasing to the Lord. Have no fellowship with the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but rather even reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret. But all things, when they are reproved, are revealed by the light, for everything that reveals is light. Therefore he says, “Awake, you who sleep, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.” (Ephesians 5:8-14 WEB)
